Shipping Diesel Generators from China to Indonesia

A practical guide to declarations packing container selection and delivery planning

A Generator Is Not Just Another Machine

A diesel generator may look like a straightforward piece of machinery, but its shipping profile depends on what is inside it, not only on its outer dimensions. Fuel residue, engine oil, coolant, a starter battery, a heavy steel base and a high center of gravity can each change the booking, packing or acceptance process.

The safest way to plan the shipment is to confirm the exact configuration before asking for a rate. A low quotation based on “general machinery” can become unusable when the carrier later learns that the unit contains fuel, oil or a battery, or when the packed height no longer fits the proposed container.

Know the Unit Before Choosing the Container

Generator sets commonly consist of a diesel engine, alternator, cooling system, control panel, base fuel tank and optional acoustic canopy. Open type units are easier to inspect and may be more compact. Silent or weatherproof units are enclosed, usually wider and heavier, and their lifting points may be less accessible.

Item to confirm

Why it matters

What ECBEC checks

Outer dimensions

Determines GP HQ FR or OT suitability

Checks packed dimensions rather than catalogue dimensions

Gross weight

Affects payload road limits and lifting plan

Confirms weight per unit and weight distribution

Fuel and oil status

May affect carrier acceptance and declaration

Confirms tanks drained and documents the condition

Starter battery

May trigger additional carrier checks

Confirms whether installed removed or shipped separately

Packing base

Controls forklift entry and cargo movement

Checks skids lifting points and blocking plan

The Risks That Usually Appear After Booking

Most generator shipping problems begin with incomplete cargo information. The shipper sends a model number and a net weight, while the forwarder books a standard container. Only at loading does the team discover a taller wooden base, protruding exhaust parts, an installed battery or oil in the engine. By then, space may be tight and changing equipment can mean a new rate or a missed sailing.

Four Pain Points Importers Should Solve Early

· Unclear cargo declaration. “New generator” does not confirm whether the unit is free of fuel, oil and battery. Each point should be answered separately and supported by the shipper.

· Catalogue dimensions instead of packed dimensions. Wooden skids, crates and rain covers can add enough height or width to change the container choice.

· Weak internal securing. A generator is dense and top heavy. A few light straps cannot replace proper blocking, bracing and lashing to suitable securing points.

· A rate without a workable route. Jakarta is usually easier to serve than secondary Indonesian ports. Makassar, Banjarmasin and other destinations may require transshipment, so routing and total transit time matter as much as the ocean freight.

Container Selection Depends on the Packed Cargo

A standard 20GP or 40HQ can work when the packed unit fits through the door and the payload and floor loading remain acceptable. When the cargo is overheight, overwidth or difficult to slide through the doors, an open top or flat rack may be required. Final acceptance always remains subject to the selected carrier, vessel and terminal.

Equipment

Typical use

Main advantage

20GP

Compact dense units

Good payload efficiency

Door size floor loading and weight distribution

40HQ

Several units or long canopies

More internal volume

Payload and securing space between units

Open top

Overheight cargo

Top loading where approved

Overheight surcharge tarpaulin and lifting plan

Flat rack

Overwidth or heavy units

Open sides and crane access

Out of gauge dimensions lashing and terminal handling

Packing and Securing Protect the Machine and the Schedule

For sea transport, the unit should be clean, dry and protected against salt air and condensation. Vulnerable control panels, radiator faces, exhaust components and cable terminals need physical protection. Where timber is used for export packing, the shipper should confirm compliant treatment and marking where required.

Inside the container, the objective is to prevent sliding, tipping and concentrated impact. The loading team should use the manufacturer’s approved lifting points, place the unit on a suitable skid, distribute weight across the floor, block the base and apply properly rated lashings. Photos taken before closing the doors create a useful loading record.

A Better Pre Booking Checklist

1. Send the commercial name, model, HS code and intended use.

2. Provide the number of units plus packed length width height and gross weight per unit.

3. Confirm in writing whether the unit contains fuel, engine oil, coolant or a starter battery.

4. Provide packing photos, lifting points and center of gravity information if available.

5. State the pickup address, cargo ready date, Incoterm and required Indonesian port.

6. Confirm whether the consignee can import the product and whether any local permits or conformity requirements apply.

7. Agree the container type and loading method only after the packed data is checked.

How ECBEC Manages the Shipment from China

ECBEC coordinates the China side before cargo reaches the terminal. We review the cargo description and packing data, compare container options, communicate acceptance details with the carrier, arrange pickup or factory loading, and coordinate export customs and sailing plans.

For shipments to Indonesia, we also pay attention to the destination, routing and timing. A low headline rate is not useful if the unit is rejected, the container type is wrong, or a transshipment route does not match the project deadline. We provide workable options so the overseas agent or importer can balance cost, capacity and schedule stability.

What We Need for a Firm Check

· POL or exact China pickup address

· POD and final delivery city in Indonesia

· Quantity and requested container type if already known

· Packed dimensions and gross weight of every unit

· Clear photos and packing method

· Fuel oil coolant and battery declaration

· Cargo ready date and preferred sailing window

· Incoterm and available export documents

If the generator is described as new, oil free and battery free, that condition should still be verified with the factory before booking. If any battery or liquid remains, tell us at the start so we can check a suitable carrier and documentation path.

Plan the Cargo Before You Chase the Rate

Generator logistics works best when the cargo facts are settled first. The packed dimensions determine the equipment; the internal condition determines the declaration; and the destination determines whether direct or transshipment service is practical. Once these points are clear, ECBEC can negotiate and reserve a solution that is more likely to survive carrier review and actual loading.

We Know China, We Know SEA.
