11Agricultural Machinery from China to Indonesia
A Practical Logistics Guide for Importers and Indonesia Freight Forwarders
Indonesia has a strong agricultural base, and the demand for modern farming equipment continues to grow as farms, cooperatives, and agricultural companies look for higher productivity, lower labor pressure, and more efficient post-harvest processing.
From tractors and rice transplanters to harvesters, irrigation pumps, feed machines, dryers, and spare parts, China remains an important sourcing market thanks to its wide product range, competitive manufacturing cost, and flexible supplier options.
For Indonesia importers, agricultural machinery can be a promising product category. But from a logistics point of view, it is not always a “simple machine shipment.” Different machine types may involve different HS codes, SNI standards, import licenses, packing methods, and customs requirements.
That is why a professional China-side logistics partner is important before the cargo is shipped.
Agricultural machinery shipments usually include tractors, rice transplanters, combine harvesters, irrigation pumps, cultivators and tillers, corn shellers, feed pellet machines, grain dryers, rice milling machines, agricultural spare parts, and battery-powered agricultural tools or drones.
Some machines can be loaded into standard containers after disassembly. Some oversized or heavy units may require flat rack, open top container, breakbulk, or special lifting arrangements.
For agricultural machinery exported from China to Indonesia, the basic documents normally include:
· Commercial Invoice
· Packing List
· Bill of Lading or Air Waybill
· Certificate of Origin, such as FORM E when applicable
· Insurance Certificate, if required
· Product Catalogue or Technical Specification
· Import License / Importer Registration from consignee side
· SNI-related documents, if the product category requires it
Document consistency matters The cargo description, model number, serial number, quantity, gross weight, package count, and consignee details should match across the invoice, packing list, B/L or AWB, and FORM E when used. |

Agricultural machinery covers many product types, and different HS codes may lead to different import duties, restrictions, or document requirements. A tractor, harvester, irrigation pump, dryer, and spare part cannot simply be treated as the same commodity. Before booking, the importer and forwarder should confirm the HS code with the Indonesia customs broker.
Some agricultural machinery categories have Indonesian National Standards. This does not mean every agricultural machine shipment has the same SNI requirement, but it does mean importers should check the exact product category before shipment.
Agricultural machinery is often packed with wooden pallets, wooden cases, or wooden supports. Wood packaging material used in international trade should meet ISPM 15 requirements where applicable, including proper treatment and marking.
Agricultural machinery is usually heavy, bulky, and irregular in shape. Incorrect loading can easily cause cargo damage, container damage, or safety risks. Important handling points include:
· Confirm accurate machine dimensions and weight.
· Check lifting points before loading.
· Use proper lashing and blocking materials.
· Protect engines, hydraulic parts, control panels, and exposed metal surfaces.
· Take loading photos and videos for record.
· Avoid moisture damage during long sea transit.
For machines with oil, fuel, batteries, or hydraulic liquid, the shipper should confirm whether the cargo is fully drained or properly declared before shipment.
Some tractors, harvesters, and processing machines cannot fit into a standard container without disassembly. The supplier may need to remove tires, cabins, blades, arms, or accessories before loading.
Heavy machines require stronger floor support, professional forklift or crane operation, and correct weight distribution inside the container.
Many shipments include one main machine plus spare parts, tools, control boxes, belts, blades, motors, or accessories. If the packing list is unclear, customs inspection and cargo checking may become difficult.
Indonesia’s tropical climate and long sea transit make moisture protection important. Machinery should be packed with anti-rust oil, moisture-proof film, desiccants, or seaworthy export packing where needed.
Agricultural machinery often has model numbers, serial numbers, engine numbers, and accessories. If the invoice, packing list, and actual cargo do not match, customs clearance may be delayed.
· Confirm the exact machine name, model, HS code, and usage.
· Ask the supplier for real dimensions and weight after packing.
· Check whether the machine needs disassembly before loading.
· Confirm if there is oil, battery, liquid, or dangerous components.
· Make sure wooden packaging follows ISPM 15 requirements when applicable.
· Prepare FORM E carefully if the importer wants to use preferential tariff treatment.
· Take loading photos and keep a complete cargo record.
· Work with an experienced China-side freight forwarder before the cargo is ready.
