A practical logistics and compliance guide for Indonesia freight forwarders, importers and industrial distributors

Why this cargo needs close attention

A single missing or incorrect bearing can stop a production line or delay machinery repair.

Bearings are compact but dense, so weight, pallet strength and local handling costs matter.

Steel surfaces require reliable anti-rust and moisture protection during sea transportation.

Model suffixes, HS classification and document consistency should be checked before export.

Small Component, Major Operational Impact

A bearing may be small enough to fit in one hand, but the failure or late arrival of a single unit can stop an entire production line.

Used in motors, pumps, industrial machinery, vehicles, agricultural equipment, construction machines and factory automation systems, bearings are essential components in almost every mechanical supply chain. For Indonesia importers and industrial distributors, maintaining a stable supply of the correct models is therefore not simply a purchasing issue—it is a production continuity issue.

When shipping bearings from China to Indonesia, importers and freight forwarders must pay attention to more than the ocean freight rate. Accurate model identification, HS code classification, moisture protection, packaging strength, cargo consolidation and customs documentation all influence whether the shipment arrives ready for immediate use.

Why Bearings Are a Critical Industrial Product

Bearings reduce friction between moving components and support rotational or linear movement. Although their individual value may be relatively low compared with complete machinery, they often perform a highly specialized function.

· Production line downtime

· Machinery maintenance delays

· Higher emergency procurement and airfreight costs

· Missed project deadlines

· Loss of sales for local distributors

· Incorrect installation caused by mixed or mislabelled models

Two bearings may look almost identical but have different internal clearances, sealing structures, load capacities or precision tolerances. Mixing these products during consolidation or relabelling can create serious problems after delivery. Bearing shipments should therefore be managed by model number, suffix, specification and application—not only by carton quantity or total weight.

Common Types of Bearings Exported from China

China manufactures a broad range of standard and customized bearings for industrial, automotive and equipment-maintenance applications. Common products exported to Indonesia include:

Ball Bearings

Widely used in electric motors, household appliances, pumps, fans, power tools and general industrial machinery. They are suitable for relatively high-speed applications and can support radial and limited axial loads.

Tapered Roller Bearings

Commonly used in vehicle wheel hubs, gearboxes, heavy machinery and construction equipment. They are designed to handle combined radial and axial loads.

Spherical Roller Bearings

Often used in mining equipment, conveyors, crushers and industrial machinery where heavy loads and shaft misalignment may occur.

Cylindrical Roller Bearings

Suitable for applications requiring high radial load capacity, including motors, generators, machine tools and industrial gearboxes.

Needle Roller Bearings

Compact products frequently used in automotive transmissions, motorcycles, compressors and machinery with limited installation space.

Bearing Parts and Accessories

Bearing rings, balls, rollers, cages, housings, seals, sleeves and related components. Complete bearings and separate parts may fall under different tariff subheadings.

HS Code Classification for Bearings

Ball and roller bearings are generally classified under HS heading 8482. The final Indonesian BTKI code depends on the exact construction, rolling element and whether the cargo consists of complete bearings or individual parts.

Importers should avoid declaring the whole shipment simply as “machine parts” or “bearings” when several product types are included. The commercial invoice and packing list should contain enough information to support the selected classification.

Recommended invoice descriptions

Deep groove ball bearing, model 6204-2RS, steel, sealed, for electric motor use.

Tapered roller bearing assembly, model 30208, including inner ring, outer ring and rollers.

The applicable Indonesian BTKI code, import duty, tax treatment and possible technical requirements should be checked against the latest regulations before shipment. A catalogue, specification sheet or product photograph may be requested when the product description alone is insufficient.

Main Logistics Risks When Shipping Bearings

1. Rust and Moisture Damage

Most bearings contain precision-finished steel surfaces. Exposure to moisture, seawater vapour or condensation can cause corrosion before the goods reach the customer. This risk is particularly important for sea freight because cargo may experience temperature and humidity changes during transportation and transshipment.

· Anti-rust oil applied according to the intended storage period

· VCI paper or sealed VCI bags

· Sealed plastic inner packaging

· Desiccants inside cartons, plywood cases or containers

· Moisture-resistant outer wrapping

· Raised pallets to prevent contact with wet warehouse floors

· Container desiccants for suitable FCL shipments

2. Model and Batch Mixing

A shipment may contain hundreds of bearing models with only minor differences in size or suffix. Suffixes such as ZZ, 2RS, C3 or P5 can indicate different shields, seals, internal clearances or precision levels. Removing these suffixes from the invoice or carton label can make stock identification difficult.

· Bearing model and complete suffix

· Brand and manufacturer, where applicable

· Quantity and batch or lot number

· Purchase order number

· Gross and net weight

· Carton number and package sequence

· Country-of-origin marking, where required

3. Heavy Weight in a Small Volume

Bearings are compact but relatively dense. A few pallets may have a small cubic volume while carrying substantial weight. For LCL shipments, freight and local handling may be calculated according to weight or volume, depending on the applicable charging rule.

· Total gross weight and total volume

· Weight per carton and per pallet

· Warehouse and forklift handling limits

· Whether palletized loading is required

· Whether the destination warehouse has unloading equipment

· Container payload and weight distribution for FCL cargo

4. Weak Cartons and Broken Pallets

Small bearings are often packed in individual boxes and then placed inside export cartons. Ordinary cartons may deform when the contents are dense. Reinforced cartons, strapped pallets or plywood cases are recommended for heavier cargo, with empty space filled to prevent internal movement.

Real export-packaging scene: corrugated cartons stacked and strapped on pallets in a warehouse. Bearing cartons require comparable stability and clear package marks.

When raw solid-wood pallets, cases or dunnage are used in international trade, they generally need to comply with ISPM 15 treatment and marking requirements. Processed wood materials such as plywood are treated differently because their manufacturing process reduces pest risk.

Documents Commonly Required

A standard bearing shipment from China to Indonesia may require the following documents, depending on the trade terms, product specifications and importer requirements:

· Commercial invoice

· Packing list

· Bill of lading or sea waybill

· Sales contract or purchase order

· Product catalogue or specification sheet

· HS code declaration and supporting product description

· Certificate of origin, when applicable

· Insurance certificate, when cargo insurance is arranged

· ISPM 15 or packaging information, when relevant

· Import permits or technical documents requested by the Indonesia importer

The invoice and packing list should use consistent model numbers, quantities, weights and package counts. Differences between documents and physical cargo can delay customs clearance, destination warehouse release or preferential tariff treatment.

Can Bearings Use Form E?

Qualifying goods originating in China may be eligible for preferential tariff treatment under the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area, subject to the applicable rules of origin and Indonesia customs requirements. Form E supports a preferential claim, but eligibility is not determined only by the shipping route.

· Correct HS code and product description

· Applicable origin qualification

· Manufacturer and exporter information

· Invoice number and date

· Transport route and consignee information

· Third-party invoicing arrangements, where applicable

· Consistency across Form E, invoice, packing list and bill of lading

Spelling errors, HS code mismatches or inconsistent invoice details can affect document acceptance. Form E information should therefore be reviewed before the original documents are finalized.

Choosing Between LCL, FCL and Air Freight

LCL Shipping

LCL is suitable for smaller or mixed orders that do not fill a complete container. It allows importers to replenish several bearing models without carrying excessive inventory. Because bearings are dense, the total destination cost should be checked carefully instead of comparing ocean freight alone.

· Origin warehouse and loading charges

· Minimum and weight-based destination charges

· Consolidation and deconsolidation time

· Multiple handling stages and carton-damage risk

· Pallet requirements and heavy-piece handling fees

FCL Shipping

FCL may be more suitable for larger distributor orders or shipments consolidated with machinery and other industrial components. It reduces cargo handling and gives the shipper greater control over loading, lashing and moisture protection. Pallet weight still needs to be distributed evenly inside the container.

Air Freight for Urgent Bearings

Air freight may be justified when a missing bearing is stopping production or delaying machinery repair. Although the freight cost is higher, an emergency shipment may be more economical than extended factory downtime. The exact model and suffix must be confirmed before dispatch—sending the wrong replacement part quickly does not solve the customer’s problem.
