Why Commercial Kitchen Equipment Needs Careful Logistics Planning
Indonesia’s restaurant, hotel, catering, café, bakery and central-kitchen sectors source a wide range of commercial kitchen equipment from China. A single project may include cooking ranges, ovens, stainless-steel tables, refrigerators, freezers, food mixers, dishwashers, exhaust equipment and dozens of smaller accessories from different factories.
From a logistics point of view, this cargo is very different from ordinary cartons. Some units are heavy and difficult to stack; some contain glass panels, control boards, compressors or precision motors; others have long stainless-steel frames that can be scratched or bent during handling. When several suppliers are involved, the challenge becomes not only transportation, but also consolidation, checking, repacking and loading control before the cargo leaves China.
For Indonesia freight forwarder partners and importers, a reliable China-side logistics partner helps turn a complicated equipment order into one controlled shipment with clearer documents, safer handling and fewer surprises at destination.
Common Commercial Kitchen Equipment Exported from China
· Cooking equipment: gas ranges, induction cookers, fryers, griddles, steamers, convection ovens and combination ovens.
· Refrigeration equipment: upright refrigerators, freezers, under-counter chillers, display coolers and ice machines.
· Food preparation equipment: planetary mixers, dough mixers, slicers, grinders, processors and stainless-steel prep stations.
· Stainless-steel systems: worktables, sinks, shelves, cabinets, trolleys, racks and customized kitchen fabrication.
· Bakery and café equipment: deck ovens, proofers, mixers, display cases, beverage machines and related accessories.
· Cleaning and ventilation equipment: dishwashers, washing stations, exhaust hoods, ducting parts and grease-control components.

The Main Logistics Risks
Commercial kitchen equipment is usually durable in daily use, but it can still be vulnerable during international transportation. The biggest risks often come from handling, stacking and poor preparation rather than from the ocean voyage itself.

Packing: Protect the Equipment Before It Reaches the Port
Good export packing should match the structure of the equipment, not just its selling price. A stainless-steel worktable may look simple but can bend at its legs. A refrigerator may be robust externally but still contains a compressor, pipework and control components. A mixer may have a heavy motor head and a different center of gravity from ordinary cargo.
· Use original export packing whenever the factory has a proven international-shipping standard.
· For higher-value or fragile units, use plywood cases or reinforced pallets with foam and edge protection.
· Lock or secure doors, lids and moving parts so they cannot swing during transport.
· Remove or separately secure shelves, trays, burners and detachable accessories.
· Protect glass, touchscreens, knobs and protruding components from direct contact.
· Add moisture-resistant wrapping when equipment may be exposed to humid warehouse or port environments.
· Keep model numbers, carton numbers and handling marks visible for warehouse checking and destination identification.
· Take packing photos before collection and loading photos before container sealing.

Multi-Supplier Consolidation: One Project, Many Factories
Commercial kitchen projects are often purchased from several suppliers: one factory for ovens, another for refrigeration, another for stainless-steel fabrication, and additional vendors for small appliances or spare parts. Shipping each order separately creates more origin charges, more documents and more coordination for the Indonesia-side team.
A China consolidation warehouse can receive the cargo from different factories, check quantities and packaging, record visible damage, confirm model marks and combine the goods into a final shipment. This is especially useful when the buyer wants one container or one consolidated LCL shipment instead of multiple small departures.
· Factory pickup and delivery to the consolidation warehouse.
· Receiving records by supplier, model, carton or pallet number.
· Basic visual checking and photo confirmation.
· Repacking or reinforcement when factory packing is not suitable for export.
· Final measurement and weight confirmation before choosing LCL or FCL.
· One consolidated packing list for easier shipment control.
· Loading supervision to separate heavy units from fragile or non-stackable cargo.
LCL or FCL? Choose the Method After Measuring the Cargo
There is no single best shipping method for commercial kitchen equipment. The right solution depends on total volume, dimensions, weight distribution, packing quality, cargo value and how many times the goods can safely be handled.
LCL can be practical for smaller orders, spare equipment or sample units, but it involves additional warehouse handling and consolidation. For fragile glass-door equipment, high-value machinery or a complete kitchen project, those extra handling points should be considered carefully.
FCL gives better control over stowage and reduces handling after loading. A 20GP may suit denser, heavier equipment, while a 40HQ can provide more volume for mixed restaurant equipment, stainless-steel units and large but relatively light pieces. The actual choice should be based on a loading plan rather than container size alone.

Container Loading: Small Details Protect Expensive Equipment
· Place heavy equipment at the bottom and keep the container weight balanced.
· Do not use fragile appliances as support for stainless-steel frames or heavy cartons.
· Use timber, straps, blocking or other suitable securing materials to reduce movement in transit.
· Maintain clearance around vulnerable control panels, glass surfaces and refrigeration components.
· Follow equipment orientation requirements; refrigeration equipment should not be casually laid down unless the manufacturer allows it.
· Fill empty spaces carefully so cargo cannot shift during vessel movement.
· Record the final loading condition with photos before closing and sealing the container.
Documents and Indonesia Import Preparation
Before booking, the cargo description should be checked product by product. A commercial kitchen project can contain several HS codes because ovens, refrigerators, mixers, stainless-steel furniture and electrical accessories are different product categories. Clear model descriptions and technical specifications make the customs process easier to coordinate.
Typical shipment documents may include the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin when applicable, and product specifications or supporting documents requested by the importer or customs broker. Import eligibility, product standards and any Indonesia-side permit or certification requirements should be confirmed by the consignee and its customs representative before shipment, especially for electrical, gas, refrigeration or other regulated equipment.
The practical rule is simple: confirm the HS code and import requirements before the cargo reaches the port. It is much easier to solve a document issue while the goods are still in the supplier’s factory or China warehouse than after the container arrives in Indonesia.

Final Takeaway
Commercial kitchen equipment is a strong product category for China–Indonesia trade, but successful shipping depends on details: correct cargo measurement, export-grade packing, careful consolidation, accurate documents and a loading plan that respects the characteristics of each machine. When these steps are controlled at origin, the shipment becomes safer and easier for the Indonesia-side forwarder or importer to manage.
With ECBEC Limited as your China logistics partner, you can manage multiple suppliers through one point of contact and build a transport plan around the cargo—not around a generic freight rate.
