Shipping Industrial Gearboxes from China to Indonesia

Packing, handling and container planning for heavy drive equipment

Industrial gearboxes may be compact relative to their weight, with exposed shafts and machined surfaces that need protection throughout the journey. For Indonesia importers and freight forwarding partners, a reliable shipment begins with accurate packed dimensions, an agreed preservation method and a loading plan that matches the actual unit. ECBEC coordinates these details on the China side before cargo is released to the port.

Check the gearbox configuration before quoting

A small reducer on a pallet and a large industrial drive on a skid create very different transport plans. Ask the supplier for the model and intended use, net and packed gross weight, packed length × width × height, lifting points, centre of gravity and photographs from several angles. Confirm whether motors, couplings, guards and spare parts travel together or as separate packages.

Also confirm whether the gearbox is shipped dry, with preservation fluid, or filled with operating oil. This affects leak prevention, packaging instructions and the information a carrier may request. Describe the actual condition to the forwarder; do not assume that every gearbox receives the same cargo acceptance treatment.

Build the package around the machine

A heavy gearbox should be fixed to a suitable base using approved mounting or tie-down points. Protect projecting shafts, flanges, nameplates and accessories against contact with the crate. For a sea voyage and possible storage after arrival, ask the manufacturer to specify preservation for internal and external metal surfaces, a moisture barrier where appropriate, and the interval for renewed protection. Record the preparation in photographs before the crate is closed.

For solid wood skids, dunnage and crates, check applicable ISPM 15 treatment and marks with the packer. Engineered wood components can be treated differently under the standard, so confirm the actual materials rather than assuming that every plywood case needs the same marking. Make handling marks, gross weight and lifting locations visible on the outer package.

Choose the equipment after checking the packed footprint

A standard dry container can suit smaller, well-crated gearboxes when door clearance, payload, floor loading and safe fork access all work. For a larger unit, the packed height or width may require an open top or flat rack. The load plan must account for the heaviest package, weight distribution, securing points, blocking and restraints. A container’s published payload alone does not establish that one concentrated piece is safe to load.

When several suppliers contribute gearboxes, motors and spares, a China warehouse can receive, count and label packages before consolidation. Keep heavy crates low and stable; keep smaller accessories identifiable by purchase order and machine number. Loading photos and a final package count help the consignee check what arrives.

Prepare documents for the actual goods

Use consistent product descriptions, models, quantities, values, package numbers, gross weights and dimensions across the commercial invoice and packing list. The Indonesia importer or its customs broker should confirm the tariff classification, import eligibility and any required technical documents for the specific gearbox. If the equipment is used, contains oil, or is part of a larger machine, flag that before booking so the parties can check requirements against the actual shipment.

Send ECBEC the shipment details

For a useful quotation, send the pickup city in China, destination in Indonesia, trade term, cargo-ready date, photos, model and commodity description, package count, packed dimensions and gross weight of each piece, and whether any oil or fluid remains inside. If a unit is unusually heavy or oversized, include the drawing and lifting plan. We can then review the pickup, packing, container choice and available ocean freight options with our Indonesia partner.
