PROJECT FOCUS
Protect long steel components, control mixed equipment packages and combine multiple Chinese suppliers into one practical export and loading plan.
Warehouse projects are usually delivered as systems, not as single machines. A typical order may combine pallet racking, mezzanine components, safety barriers, conveyors, dock equipment, forklifts, pallet stackers, spare parts and electrical controls from several Chinese manufacturers. The cargo may look straightforward on a packing list, but its handling profile can be unusually complex.
Long beams and upright frames consume container length, heavy base plates concentrate weight, painted steel surfaces are vulnerable to scratching, and small connectors can be lost among hundreds of packages. Powered handling equipment may also contain batteries, oil, hydraulic systems or other components that require additional documents. Good logistics planning begins before factory pickup and continues through consolidation, loading and document review.

Because these products vary in length, weight, surface finish, lifting method and regulatory profile, the full order should be reviewed as one project rather than booked as unrelated cartons and bundles.
Rack beams, upright frames and conveyor sections may be relatively light for their volume, but their length can determine container selection and loading direction. The packed length must be checked against the container’s internal dimensions and door opening. A component that fits inside the container may still be difficult to move safely through the doorway.
Forklifts, dock equipment and structural bases can be heavy, while racks, decks and control panels are easier to deform. Heavy equipment should sit on load-bearing supports and should not press against long painted components. Weight concentration and axle limits also need review for factory pickup, terminal delivery and the final container payload.
Bolts, anchors, connectors, sensors and controllers can be small in relation to the overall shipment but critical to installation. Package numbering and a component-level packing list help the warehouse team reconcile receipts and identify shortages before export.
Forklifts and stackers may be supplied with lithium-ion or lead-acid batteries, chargers, hydraulic oil or other regulated components. Confirm the battery chemistry, rating, quantity, installation status and available test or safety documents before booking. The carrier’s acceptance should be obtained before the cargo reaches the cutoff date.

A reliable booking and loading plan depends on accurate packed data, not catalogue dimensions alone. Ask every supplier to provide the final packing list and clear photographs after packing.
l Supplier location, cargo-ready date and contact person
l Exact commodity description, model and intended warehouse use
l Package count, dimensions, gross weight and cubic volume for every package type
l Longest piece, heaviest piece and any package with an off-center load
l Knock-down or assembled condition and the proposed loading orientation
l Forklift pockets, lifting points, center-of-gravity and unloading requirements
l Surface finish and protection method for painted or galvanized components
l Battery, charger, hydraulic oil or other regulated-material information
l Packing and cargo photos, including marks and component numbers
PRACTICAL RULE
Book from the final packed dimensions. Catalogue sizes, assembled sizes and estimates are not sufficient for container loading calculations.
Uprights, beams and braces should be grouped by type and length, aligned on stable supports and strapped at multiple points. Use padded straps or edge protection so tension does not mark painted surfaces. Avoid direct steel-to-steel movement where scratching or coating damage would affect installation or appearance.
Beam hooks, punched columns, welded brackets and connector tabs are vulnerable to bending. Use end caps, rigid corner guards, foam sheets or suitable timber frames. Long bundles should remain fully supported during warehouse storage, forklift handling and container loading.
Bolts, anchors, clips and sensors should be sealed in strong cartons or cases and marked by project zone, rack line or installation sequence. A master packing list should show which package contains each accessory group. High-value controls and electronic parts may need separate waterproof protection.
When solid-wood pallets, crates, blocks or dunnage are used, confirm the applicable ISPM 15 treatment and mark before loading. Processed-wood materials such as plywood may fall outside the same scope, but the final packing design should still be confirmed for the destination and cargo type.
Confirm the equipment’s transport dimensions, gross weight, mast height, fork position and battery status. Remove loose accessories, secure moving parts, protect control levers and isolate the unit from long rack bundles. If the mast, forks or cabin must be removed, the packing list should identify every detached component.
Roller frames, drives, sensors, motors and control cabinets should be marked by line or installation section. Protect exposed rollers and electrical interfaces from impact and moisture. Cable sets and mounting hardware should be packed with clear references to the related conveyor section.
Dock levelers, lift tables and steel platforms can create concentrated loads. Confirm their base dimensions, lifting points and center of gravity. Hydraulic lines, cylinders, control boxes and loose ramps should be protected and secured as separate identified items.
LCL can be practical for spare parts and small orders, but long or non-stackable bundles may attract additional handling or dead-space charges. For a full warehouse project, FCL is usually the safer starting point because it provides a controlled loading sequence and reduces exposure to mixed cargo.
The loading plan should be prepared from the package list and the actual container. Inspect the empty container for damage, water ingress, floor condition, strong odor and door operation before loading. The sequence should support safe forklift access, balanced weight distribution and efficient unloading at destination.
l Position heavy machinery over suitable load-bearing areas and distribute weight across the floor.
l Use timber or engineered supports, anti-slip material, blocking, bracing and lashings appropriate to the load.
l Keep long steel bundles away from container doors unless the unloading plan specifically requires door-first access.
l Do not allow machinery or heavy bases to transfer pressure into rack frames, decks or control cabinets.
l Secure every detached mast, fork, ramp, motor and accessory package against movement.
l Photograph the empty container, support arrangement, loading stages, securing points, final stow and seal number.
The IMO/ILO/UNECE CTU Code provides guidance for packing and securing cargo throughout the intermodal transport chain. The exact securing method should be designed for the cargo profile, transport modes and loading conditions rather than copied from an unrelated shipment.

A warehouse project may involve one supplier for racking, another for conveyors and others for forklifts, dock equipment, controls and spare parts. Shipping each order separately can multiply domestic pickup, export documentation and destination handling costs. It also makes it harder to confirm whether the complete system has been shipped.
l Contact every supplier and confirm actual cargo-ready dates.
l Arrange factory pickup or receive supplier-delivered cargo at the China warehouse.
l Record package counts, dimensions, gross weight, marks and visible condition.
l Reconcile project components against the master packing list.
l Photograph shortages, damage or weak packaging and obtain written instructions.
l Repack, reinforce or relabel selected packages when agreed.

Warehouse racking and material handling equipment can fall under different tariff classifications depending on construction, function, power source and whether the item is a complete machine or a part. The Indonesia importer and customs broker should confirm the final HS code and current import requirements for every product group before shipment.
